Number of Sprouted Seeds After 30 Days

Enter the number of seeds that sprouted out of the five planted Windsor or Vroma seeds. Don't be frustrated, fava bean seeds can be slow to germinate.

Nodule Number on One Fava Root

Dig up one fava bean plant and count the number of nodules on the taproot. Fava bean, like other legumes, forms a symbiotic relation with soil microorganisms to fix nitrogen fertilizer from the atmosphere. This symbiotic relationship results in the formation of nodules on the roots. Dig up one of your Vroma and one of your Windsor plants, gently wash the roots, and count the number of nodules. If you notice a lot of nodules on the root then the plant is fixing a lot of nitrogen fertilizer for the fava bean plant and the crop that you plant this summer!

Insect and Disease Notes

Let us know if you see any insect or disease damage on the Windsor or Vroma variety. Aphids are the most common insect pest and small brown spots (chocolate spot) are commonly seen on the leaves.
